Three Traverse City East Junior High School ninth grade students were honored on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post. Under the guidelines of the VFW's Voice of Democracy program; Lydia Belanger, John Neilson, and Alan Jacobson wrote compelling essays on the topic “Freedom’s Challenge.” The essays were submitted as recorded speeches of three to five minutes in length. Lydia Belanger received a $500 savings bond for first place and was honored to read her essay to the post's membership. Alan Jacobson was awarded a $300 savings bond and Jon Nielson received a $100 savings bond for their essays and a school trophy was awarded to Traverse City East Junior High School for participation in the VFW Voice of Democracy program.
