Seventy-five students from Traverse City Central High School are looking for 17 veterans of World War II, Korean, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf Wars to be interviewed during the weeks of February 28th and March 6th. In partnership with the United Way of Northwest Michigan and the Library of Congress, the interviews are part of the Veterans History Project, which is underway in the classrooms of teachers Mike McManus, Kim Fleming, and Dave Hendrix. These “living histories” are first-person accounts of the veterans’ experiences.
Everyday the number of veterans dwindles by 1,700. A national collection of personal histories on videotape is of immeasurable value to students, historians, educators, authors, filmmakers, and family members. Veterans receive a copy of the one-hour videotaped interview and a copy is sent to the Library of Congress to part of our nation’s history.
The local effort organized by the United Way of Northwest Michigan has involved students and faculty from T. C. Central High School, Northwest Michigan College, and Interlochen Center for the Arts. For more information contact Susan L. McQuaid, Director of Volunteer Center at the United Way of Northwest Michigan at 231- 947-3200 Ext. 20.
