The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) has recognized Traverse City Area Public Schools teacher, Jaye Lynn Trapp, as the 2010 Distinguished Teacher for her extraordinary commitment to teaching and learning of geography in the classroom. Her award was based on her innovative integration of geography into the 5th grade curriculum.

Jaye Lynn Trapp holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from Central Michigan University. She employs a number of techniques to improve student learning, including subject integration and role-playing. She is an active member of the Michigan Geographic Alliance and has presented at a number of state and national conferences. She was awarded the Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Educator Award in 2003 and Ameritech’s Teacher Excellence Award for integrating technology into the classroom. The list of her educational awards is lengthy and attests to her dedication to the profession. Ms. Trapp will teach at Traverse City West Middle School this school year.

“Jaye Lynn Trapp has touched many young lives by bringing history and geography alive in the classrooms through relevant, inquisitive, educational adventures,” commented TC West Middle School Principal, Pam Alfieri.

Mrs. Trapp will be honored at an awards ceremony during the NCGE annual conference to be held September 30 – October 3, 2010 in Savannah, Georgia.

The NCGE was charted in 1915 to promote geographic education at all levels of instruction. It currently has over 2,000 members worldwide.

Please contact Zachary Dulli at the NCGE Central Office at (202)-260-4237 for more information.
