TRAVERSE CITY, MI (Aug.4, 2010) – The State today released a “report card” of how schools, including Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS), are meeting federal and state standards for student achievement. Today’s results showed TCAPS’ District met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measures in all areas for elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each of TCAPS’ elementary and middle schools as well as TC Central High School and TC West Senior High School made AYP. Among TCAPS’ schools that received grades, almost 90% received a grade of “A”, and others received a “B” as measured by Education YES! Traverse City High School did not receive an Ed Yes! grade or make AYP because the State does not calculate a grade for schools with small populations (less than 30 students in 11th grade) and the school did not meet requirements for graduation rate.

The school report card incorporates Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which is part of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, with Education YES!, Michigan’s accreditation plan. AYP is the minimum level of improvement that school districts and schools must achieve each year in English Language Arts and Mathematics under NCLB legislation. Education YES! measures student academic achievement over time, and provides a snapshot of each school’s efforts to improve student and school performance by reporting on multiple indicators
of success.

“TCAPS’ positive results are a direct reflection of the intense work and commitment of our teachers and instructional leaders. Their unwavering focus on effective instruction to meet the learning needs of every student is evident,” noted Superintendent Steve Cousins. “At every level from our elementary schools through our secondary schools, TCAPS’ school communities are intent upon getting to know every student, keeping that student connected to school, and supporting all students and families,” emphasized Cousins.

Under NCLB, it is important for schools as a whole to meet target goals to achieve AYP status. AYP mandates that every school ensures that 95% of students take state mandated tests and that individual student scores improve for minorities, special education students, economically disadvantaged students, and students who are learning English as a second language. Additionally, all subgroups in a school must meet the target goals; if even one group does not meet the target goals, then the school will not make AYP.
