Teams from Traverse City West Middle School and Traverse City West Senior High School competed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held from May 26th through May 29th, at Michigan State University in Lansing. The TC West Middle School team placed 15th out of 61 teams. Students were able to spend time with a South Korean Buddy Team and helped host Polish and German teams in Traverse City.

The TC West Middle School team chose a problem sponsored by NASA, called “Discovered Treasures.” Teams became archeologists in original performances that included discovering two archeological treasures. Teams also showed off their artistic abilities in the creative representation of the “Discovered Treasures.” This Division II team includes 8th grade students Erica Keene and Noelle Sieloff, and 7th grade students Maria and Mario Cassem and Carl Vanderklipp.

The TC West Senior High School team placed 30th out of 46 teams. Students chose the “Column Structure” problem where teams had to design and build strong structures made of balsa wood and glue, and then test the structure for its ability to support as much weight as possible. The structure was to be made out of columns that could not touch each other. This Division III team consisted of Julia Ensign, Colby Fortin, Stephanie Long, Alya Nadji, Ryhan Nadji, and Zeky Nadji.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international education program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for student from kindergarten through college. Students apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devises to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the United States from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
