Beginning Monday, January 29th, TCAPS’ three high schools will begin school four minutes earlier as part of the pilot “delayed start” schedule that students will follow for the remainder of the school year. The earlier start times are as follows:
New Daily Start Times for High Schools Starting January 29th through June 15th:
Central High School New Daily Start Time 8:01 a.m.
Traverse City High School New Daily Start Time 7:48 a.m.
West Senior High School New Daily Start Time 8:01 a.m.
The pilot “delayed start” schedule allows time for departmental work and staff collaboration on TCAPS’ Secondary Framework to improve teaching and learning by delaying the start of school on the third Monday of March, April, and May. This work will include: aligning the curriculum with new graduation requirements, exploration of alternate schedules, developing and refining course syllabi and formative assessments, and sharing best practices.
The delayed start schedule for the third Monday of March, April, and May is as follows:
Third Monday “Delayed Start” Times:
(March 19, 2007 / April 16, 2007 / May 21, 2007)
Central High School Delayed Start Time 10:05 a.m.
Traverse City High School Delayed Start Time 9:50 a.m.
West Senior High School Delayed Start Time 10:05 a.m.
The schedule change will not involve any loss of instructional time, will not interrupt schedules for students at the Career Technical Center or Northwestern Michigan College, and will make provisions for those students who arrive at the regularly scheduled start time. Buses will run on the regular schedule and the Learning Media Center, cafeteria, and other academic resources will be available to meet students’ needs who arrive at the regular start time.
The proposed schedule has the support of the School Improvement Teams at each school, which consist of parents, students, community members, and faculty. The pilot will be evaluated at the end of the school year to determine its effectiveness. Please contact your High School’s Main Office for more information.
