On May 25th, students from Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH program along with students from across Northern Michigan presented research projects at the Sixth Annual Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium (NMMESS). At NMMESS, students presented projects that answered a scientific, mathematical, or engineering question, or solved a problem. A committee of local secondary educators, college educators, and business/industry professionals reviewed the student projects and presentations.
TC Central High School freshman and member of TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH program Daniel Fedor earned the High Honors Award and $250 savings bonds for his project titled “Defogging Time in Seconds and Voltage through Resistance Wire.”
Four additional students earned Honorable Mention Awards and a $100 savings bond. Students who are members of TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH program at TC Central High School and earned Honorable Mention Awards include sophomore Patrick Koro (“The Efficiency of an ROV Motor”) and sophomore Paul Klug (“Electromagnetic Field Effects on Seedlings”). A team of two seniors from TBAISD Career Tech Center’s Manufacturing Technology Academy program earned Honorable Mention Awards for their project titled “Heavyweight Sumo Robot.” These students are Karl Haworth (Traverse City Central) and Jack Kerby-Miller (Glen Lake).
The Seventh Annual Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium will be held in the spring of 2011. NMMESS is open to all math and/or science students ranging from upper elementary (grades 4-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12) in the five-county Traverse Bay Region.
This event is sponsored by Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH program, the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, and Northwestern Michigan College. A grant from Traverse City Light and Power helped fund the purchase of research equipment for the SCI-MA-TECH students.
Please contact TBAISD Math/Science Coordinator Tom Wessels at (231) 922-7875 or TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH Director John Failor at (231) 933-3554 for more information.
