Traverse City Area Public Schools salutes the accomplishments of all area educators who were recently honored as a 2010 Outstanding Educator of the Year. Four Traverse City Area Public Schools’ employees were among the honorees to receive this prestigious award. These educators will be honored at the annual awards ceremony held on Wednesday, June 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Dennos Museum, Milliken Auditorium, on the Northwestern Michigan College campus, 1701 East Front Street.
The following employees were recognized for their dedication to all TCAPS’ students, the community, and their colleagues:
Chuck Mueller, Traverse City East Middle School Teacher
TC East Middle School Principal Glenn Solowiej notes, “Chuck’s energy and enthusiasm impacts each student and staff person that graces the halls. He is a valued resource person when a student is in crisis and his calming demeanor assists the students in refocusing their own energies. Chuck masterfully establishes relationships throughout the school so when he is needed to "work his magic" there already exists a level of trust. His laughter permeates the building and he is sought out by many to work something through.”
Linda Melvin Long Lake Elementary School Teacher
“Mrs. Melvin’s classroom is a challenging, joyful learning environment. She genuinely respects and cares for all of her students and receives that from them in return. Her expectations are high yet reasonable,” commented Long Lake Elementary School Principal Terri Sheldon.
Becky Rankens, Traverse City Central High School Teacher
“TC Central High School is very proud of Becky Rankens being named 2010 Outstanding Educator,” stated TC Central High School Principal Jim Leyndyke. “She is a wonderful contributor to our building and always brings a smile and positive attitude with her to work. Congratulations to Becky for this honor.”
Patricia Schneider, Old Mission Peninsula School Teacher
“Miss Schneider is so much fun and she makes LEARNING fun,” commented a fifth grade student in Patricia Schneider’s Class. “We will always remember the lines of latitude and longitude that she draws on her face with marker! I know I'm too young to vote and you guys probably think I change my mind every ten minutes, but my mind is set on her because she actually cares about me and everyone around me.”
This year’s initiative is facilitated by the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District in partnership with the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and the TBA Credit Union. The Traverse City Chamber of Commerce started the Outstanding Educator of the Year Award Program in 1984 and nominations are accepted from throughout a five county region. Out of numerous nominations received, these TCAPS employees are four out of the top ten educators to be honored this year.
