Traverse City Central High School SCI-MA-TECH and Honors Biology Teacher, Kelli Hannum-Spencer, has been named a 2010 Siemens Science, Technology, Engineer, and Mathematics (STEM) Fellow and invited to attend the Siemens STEM Institute in Washington D.C. this summer along with fifty teachers from across the United States.

Kelli Hannum-Spencer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Central Michigan University. She currently teaches honors biology at Traverse City Central High School in the SCI-MA-TECH Academy. Kelli taught sixth grade science and social studies for twelve years in the Traverse City Talented and Gifted program. She recently co-facilitated a sixth grade Robotically Operated Underwater Vehicle team and currently is a staff facilitator and member of the Michigan Coalition of Essential Schools Consortium.

“I believe in bringing relevance to, confidence in, and deep experience with science, math, engineering, and technology is the key to my students’ success in their community, personal, and professional lives,” commented Kelli Hannum-Spencer. “Participating in the Siemens STEM Institute is a tremendously exciting opportunity to network with professionals in the field as well as world class educators. I am so honored to have this opportunity to extend my learning outside of the classroom and in turn, to share with my teaching team at home!”

“Kelli is dynamic and relentless in her pursuit to support her students in their learning. This is demonstrated in the care she takes to develop a learning environment that is rigorous and relevant,” commented TC Central High School Assistant Principal Rick Vandermolen. “Yet Kelli also takes students where they are and provides instruction that has a more individualized approach. It is exciting to have Kelli represent the TC Central High School community at such a prestigious institute. We are excited to learn from her experience when she returns from the institute.”

The Siemens STEM Institute is an all expenses-paid, immersive, weeklong professional development experience hosted at the world headquarters of Discovery Communications, in Washington, D.C. Ms. Hannum-Spencer will take part in interactive field trips to leading science and research institutions where STEM Fellows will observe real-world applications of STEM subject matter, and opportunities for networking and collaborating with peers across the nation. In addition to broad-based STEM applications, each Fellow will be assigned to a thematic working group that will provide additional deep-dive exposure and hands-on content integration.
