Central Grade School and Westwoods Elementary School will extend their early childhood programs to include Young Fives for the 2010-2011 school year. The Young Fives program is a half day / every day program for kindergarten age children with late birthdates (May 1-Nov 30). The Young Fives program uses the Creative Curriculum and is intended to focus on the social /emotional and academic readiness skills that will prepare a child for a regular year of kindergarten the following year. Young Fives is intended for children who are not yet socially ready for kindergarten, rather than for children experiencing developmental delays. Though not mandated, it is strongly recommended that the Young Fives children enter a regular kindergarten option following their year in Young Fives, rather than going into first grade. Transportation will be self-provided in this option.
“The Young Fives program has been a great addition to our school,” stated Central Grade School Principal Bob Peters. “We have been pleased to provide this quality educational program as an alternative choice to kindergarten for families.”
“We are excited to offer yet another program option for parents and children at Westwoods Elementary School,” commented Westwoods Elementary School Principal Sander Scott. “The Young Fives program is a great addition to our excellent preschool and K-5 programming here at Westwoods Elementary School.”
Interested parents may contact Central Grade School at (231) 933-5600 or Westwoods Elementary School at (231) 933-7970. For more information on all early childhood programs offered through Traverse City Area Public Schools, go to: www.tcaps.net/earlychildhood.
