Traverse City West Middle School has been awarded a grant through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Safe Routes to School Initiative. Traverse City West Middle School, in partnership with the Grand Traverse County Road Commission and the Charter Township of Garfield, will implement safety improvements and educational programming to improve the opportunities for students to travel safely between their homes and school. Project components include installing a non-motorized path on Silver Lake Road and implementing a school-based walking and biking club. The project budget is $188,263.00.

"We are thrilled with this grant award. This was a highly competitive application process and we are fortunate to get an award this large,” commented TCAPS’ Energy, Environment, and Safety Director Rod Lowes. “It is a credit to the school and all of our partners that have worked so hard. These improvements should be a real plus for our students as well as the neighborhood and we can't wait to get started."

West Middle School Safe Routes to School is a coalition including students, parents, TCAPS staff, Garfield Township, TART Trails, Grand Traverse County Road Commission, representatives of Law Enforcement and Fire Services, as well as other community leaders. The coalition's goal is to make it safe and fun to walk or bicycle to school, which can contribute to increases in the level of health and well-being of the students. As an added benefit, research has also shown that moderate exercise before school helps prepare students to concentrate and learn in the classroom.
