On Thursday, January 14th, Traverse City West Middle School 7th Grade student James Seekamp won the school-level competition of the 2010 National Geographic Bee. James was declared the champion and moves one step closer to a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Runner-up Austin Kaufman, and third place finisher Chris Hronek followed James, and in fourth place was Daniel Lock. The school-level Geographic Bee was the first round in the 22nd Annual National Geographic Bee.
The kickoff for this year’s National Geographic Bee was the week of November 9th, with thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including James, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Geographic Bee on April 9, 2010.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for competition in the National Geographic Bee National Championship on May 25 –26, 2010. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expedition and National Geographic.
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
