Beginning Monday, January 18th, through Friday, January 22nd, members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Women’s Initiative will visit Traverse City Area Public Schools. The MIT guests will spend a day at each of TCAPS’ secondary schools conducting hands-on sessions for female students to foster interest and increase awareness of opportunities for women in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering. TCAPS was one of ten school districts across the country chosen to host the MIT engineering students.
The MIT Women’s Initiative is outreach effort by female engineering students who are visiting school districts across the country during the month of January and to interact with middle and high school girls and to foster their awareness and interest in mathematics and science. It is a free program to schools.
MIT is a world-class educational institution. A primary and continuing principle of MIT is to lead teaching and research with relevance to the practical world. The Women’s Initiative program emphasizes the importance of creating personalized interactions between school-aged women and college women. School-aged students can identify more closely with college students than with college recruiters and industry professionals.
