In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 18th, students and teachers throughout Traverse City Area Public Schools are learning, sharing, and participating in service activities in honor of the great humanitarian, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Examples of the many activities occurring in TCAPS’ schools include:
MLK Kindness Challenge - In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's belief that through nonviolence and service to one another problems can be overcome, a group of elementary school students have accepted the MLK Kindness Challenge. Students are recognizing each other as they observe acts of kindness. Details of these kind acts are posted in the school hallway. Students who are observed doing something kind are given a Kindness Coin, which pictures Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These coins are then used to initiate discussion during class meetings.
- An elementary school class will conduct a presentation about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for their entire student body. The class will sing songs and present the book "Whoever You Are" by Mem Fox, which discusses different cultures and generations, and celebrates the bonds that unite us. The students have also created illustrations depicting various parts of the book.
- Some first and second grade students are reading "My Brother Martin" by Christine King Ferris and watching the Great Americans for Children video: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students will then write their dreams on multi-colored people to be displayed in the school hallway.
- Volunteers from United Way are coming to several TCAPS elementary schools to read books about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to preschool through third grade classrooms.
- Some students will be creating a timeline of Dr. Martin Luther King's life with pictures and creating a mobile. Discussion will also be occurring in the classroom.
- Some elementary students will be viewing the video on United Streaming, Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A moment of silence in memory of Dr. King will be observed. Students will be asked what they think Dr. King's words mean in our everyday lives. The big words that students observe in the video will be used to create sentences, paragraphs, and essays as well as used in art projects.
- Some first grade students will be taking home a TIME for Kids magazine about Dr. King to go along with their classroom discussions. They will also be making bookmarks with a quote from Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech, learning a snappy finger play, and utilizing coloring projects.
- Many classes will be watching films and conducting discussions.
- Public Speaking & Forensics classes are watching a video of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech to kick off the students' next class project.
- Multiple bulletin boards are posted in classrooms honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. books and videos are available in classrooms and in the school libraries.
- Some social studies classes will be listening to excerpts from the “I have a Dream” speech, and then students will write their own “Dreams” for the world.
