Yesterday, January 14th, TCAPS Superintendent Jim Feil announced to staff his plans to retire from Traverse City Area Public Schools at the end of the school year. Mr. Feil has served as the leader of the area’s largest public school system that serves over 10,000 students and their families for the past five years.

During a time of accelerated change for Traverse City Area Public Schools, education in general, and challenging economic conditions, Mr. Feil has steered TCAPS through major instructional improvements and system-wide changes such as: implementing new rigorous graduation requirements; trimesters; the move to middle schools; All Day / Every Day Kindergarten programs; and passage of a $105 million bond issue. Strategic capital initiatives have included constructing a district-wide high speed optical fiber ring; reconstructing three elementary school buildings; major secondary site improvements; and developing and implementing major technology and communication system upgrades.

Jim Feil is acknowledged for his passionate advocacy to raise awareness and bring about legislative changes that started with the launching of a statewide school equity reform movement that has already delivered $2.4 million of additional revenue to the district and will bring in over $1.3 million per annum going forward.

School Board President Marjie Rich indicated, “Jim Feil’s years of service and contributions to TCAPS are sincerely recognized and appreciated across the school district and community. The Board will be acting upon his announced retirement at the January 18th Board of Education Meeting.”
