On Saturday, February 20th, Traverse City East Middle School will host Michigan History Day District 3 Competition. Student participants and community members willing to serve as judges for the competition are currently being sought. Setup will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the TC East Middle School Cafeteria, 1776 Three Mile Road North. Judging will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the winners announced by 1:00 p.m. The community is invited to attend this free event.
TC East Middle School is inviting all interested area students to participate. The competition is open to all students, grades 4-12, from public, private, and parochial schools as well as home-schooled students. An entire class, one or two students in a particular class, or individual students not representing any particular school may participate. Historical Societies and civic groups are encouraged to sponsor students affiliated with their organization.
The theme for 2010 is Innovation in History: Impact and Change. All entries must address this theme. As an individual, a student may elect to do a historical paper, an exhibit, a solo performance, a documentary, or a Web site. With one to four partners, students can do a group exhibit, a group performance, a group documentary, or a group Web site. Students in grades 4-5 compete in the Youth Division; grades 6-8 compete in the Junior Division, and grades 9-12 compete in the Senior Division. Details on what is required for a successful History Day entry can be found in the Michigan History Day Teacher and Student Handbookand may be downloaded at:www.hsmichigan.org/mhd.
Michigan History Day is one of the many educational programs sponsored by the Historical Society of Michigan, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of and appreciation for Michigan history. History Day is an effort to encourage young people to understand and appreciate history by entering their projects in a nationwide competition.
