Traverse Heights Elementary School has been awarded a federally funded Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant through the Michigan Department of Education. The grant will allow for all Traverse Heights Elementary School students to receive a free snack to be eaten in the classroom during the school day.
Beginning Monday, December 14th, all Traverse Heights Elementary School students will receive a free snack and will no longer need to bring one from home. The snacks will consist of fresh fruits and vegetables and will promote nutrition and healthy eating.
“The opportunity to provide our students with fresh fruits and vegetables is exciting! As a Healthy Communities Grant recipient from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, this new endeavor aligns directly with the goals that we are trying to achieve,” stated Traverse Heights Elementary School Principal, Jessica Ziecina. “Research has demonstrated a correlation between healthy eating and academic achievement. I applaud our Food and Nutrition Services staff for pursuing this grant to keep our educational focus well-rounded.”
The free snacks will be available daily at Traverse Heights Elementary School for the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year. Please contact TCAPS’ Food and Nutrition Services Director, Kristen Misiak at (231) 933-1911 for more information.
