On Saturday, November 21st, students from Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Montessori at Glenn Loomis competed against 31 other schools in the 2009 FIRST Lego League Competition in Grandville, Michigan. This was the first competition for the team called the Lego Maniacs. After competing in many rounds the team placed second in the Innovative Robot Design category. This year the theme was “Smart Moves.” Students had to design and build a robot that focused on transportation that can affect their lives, their school, and their city.
The FIRST Lego League is a Lego Robotics competition designed to inspire teamwork, technical strategies, and gracious professionalism in students from 9-14 years of age. Teams are given a 4’x8’ game field with specific missions. The teams build a robot that can complete as many objectives as possible in a two-minute and 30-second match time. Students can earn additional points by answering technical questions, performing a spontaneous requirement, and creating a project they can share with their community.
