Traverse City Area Public Schools, along with other school districts throughout Michigan, will recognize National School Bus Safety Week from October 19th – 26th, as adopted by the State Board of Education, celebrating the theme: “Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm.”
Community members are asked to be vigilant and pay close attention to school buses when driving on the street, especially when the overhead red flashers come on. According to the Michigan State Police, one of the biggest reasons motorists are caught running a school bus’ flashing red lights is due to distractions, most commonly from cell phone use.
TCAPS’ Transportation Department includes more than 177 school bus drivers and other transportation workers. These dedicated employees ensure that school buses remain the safest form of transportation. According to the National Safety Council, students have a 1-in-8 billion chance of being seriously injured while riding in a school bus than in a family car (where their chances of being seriously injured increase to 1-in-20).
Getting students to and from school safely and on schedule makes bus drivers an integral part of our schools and our communities. TCAPS’ bus drivers are the people who make sure that students get to school and back home safely everyday. They are the first school workers to greet students in the morning and the last to wave good-bye to them in the afternoon.
For more information please contact TCAPS’ Transportation Director, Phillip Haldaman at (231) 933-1924.
