TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH program, located at Traverse City Central High School, will offer an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Building for the Classroom on November 6th from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and November 7th from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute in Traverse City, 715 East Front Street.

Grade K – 12 educators in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics or any other disciplines that have an interest in aquatic environments (i.e. chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, etc.) are invited to apply. A maximum number of eight teams will be selected to participate in the workshop (teams of three people form the same school, district or ISD – 24 total participants), based on:

  • Team group dynamics
  • A future vision and willingness to implement ROV technology into the classroom
  • Professional background, leadership experience and philosophy
  • A letter of support from their respective school principal committing $150 toward the cost of materials used in the workshop ($50 per participant)
  • Willingness to share with the group what they have accomplished as a result of the workshop
  • First preference will be given to schools in the Great Lakes region that have not previously participated in a CEF-ROV workshop
Within the confines of the workshop, educators will be exposed to a truly unique educational outreach opportunity that includes the resources, instruction and support, for the designing, engineering, and building of a fully functional underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Within this workshop the NASA Aerospace Education Service will provide an overview of NASA Missions from under the ocean research to the robotic spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond. Participants will be prepared to utilize NASA Educational resources to enhance their existing curriculum while incorporating the Underwater ROV into the STEM and related aquatic disciplines.

This workshop is made possible by the sponsorship of Great Lakes Water Institute at Northwestern Michigan College, NASA Glenn Research Center, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Civic Center Pool, and Grand Traverse County.

Please contact SCI-MA-TECH teacher, Keith Forton at (231) 933-8536 or fortonke@tcaps.net for more information or an application. When emailing please include “ROV Workshop” in the subject line.
