Traverse Heights Elementary School has been selected as an "Adopt-A-School" by the United States Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.   Beginning in October, US Coast Guard volunteers will work with groups of students as recess buddies to promote physical fitness, cooperation, and respect. In addition, US Coast Guard members will participate in school-wide recognition lunches and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

To kick off the event, TCAPS and the United States Coast Guard will hold a joint ceremony at the Traverse Heights Elementary School bus loop on Tuesday, September 15th, at 2:15 p.m. Representatives from both Traverse City Area Public Schools and the United States Coast Guard will provide remarks. Following the brief ceremony, Traverse Heights Elementary School students will have the opportunity to view a Coast Guard helicopter, which will land onsite at the school.

Air Station Traverse City is committed to enhancing educational opportunities and career awareness for the nation’s youth through direct participation in education-related programs. All members of the US Coast Guard family including active duty, reservists, auxiliarists, civilians, and retirees are encouraged to participate in their communities.

“We are so grateful for this exciting partnership that will provide our students with opportunities to connect with our community and our US Coast Guard volunteers offer outstanding role models for students,” remarked Superintendent Jim Feil. “TCAPS’ goals for student achievement and development recognize the importance of helping students form relationships that promote rigorous and relevant learning. We see this partnership as a great synergy between TCAPS and the US Coast Guard.”

For Air Station Traverse City, the overall goal of the program is to increase awareness of the United States Coast Guard, its mission, its people, and the opportunities it provides young people of all ethnic backgrounds and genders; within minority communities to increase the level of academic excellence, and to enhance the United States Coast Guard’s recruiting sources.
