Traverse City Central High School and Traverse City West Senior High School will each hold Peer Mentor Program Training Sessions in preparation for the 2009-2010 school year. High school upper classmen will learn that mentoring freshmen is a great responsibility and an excellent experience for them as well as the freshmen student they will mentor.
Peer mentoring programs were implemented at the two high schools during the 2008-2009 school year as part of the Smaller Learning Communities Initiative. The program is intended for freshmen students and is designed to ease the transition for incoming students during their first year in high school by helping students feel safe and comfortable in their new environment and to ensure successful academic achievement. The mentoring program offers new students the opportunity to build relationships with older students who can share their experiences and advice on settling into a new learning environment.
High school juniors and seniors who have been selected to serve as mentors in the Peer Mentoring Program receive extensive training prior to meeting with the mentees. Each mentor will be assigned a group of freshmen to work with during the 2009-2010 school year. Serving as a mentor provides an enriching learning experience for both the mentor and the mentee.

TC West Senior High School
- Friday, August 7, 2009 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Library Media Center
