Today at 5:30 p.m., third grade students from Eastern Elementary School will celebrate their newly planted Learning Garden with a potluck picnic. Third grade teachers, Jane Boerema and Charma Brian, started the Learning Garden last summer. Both teachers designed and constructed the perimeter of the garden by using concrete pieces donated by Traverse City Central High School. They have implemented the Learning Garden into their Plant Unit curriculum. Students have been maintaining the garden with numerous perennials and plants that have been donated. An Arbor tree was also graciously donated to the Learning Garden.
“It’s a great learning activity for the students,” commented Eastern Elementary School Principal Sue Zell. “The Learning Garden will be more beautiful every year.”
The potluck picnic will be held right outside of the gymnasium at Eastern Elementary School, 1600 Eastern Avenue.
