Today the Michigan Department of Education announced grant awards for the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21stCCLC) program. TCAPS has demonstrated a successful track record and benefited from previous Federal and State 21st CCLC grants that helped create a highly successful YouthCorp Program at Traverse City High School, which began in 2003.

“We believe this grant will mean a lot to TC High School and continue to offer a big boost to our students. TC High School’s YouthCorp has helped students who need to work as well as given them the support they need to stay in school and graduate. In addition, CLC funds and collaboration with Boys & Girls Club of Grand Traverse, co-applicant in the grant, will support many other extended learning offerings to help students form important life-long educational connections,” noted Principal Lance Morgan.

When the previous Consortia CLC grant ended, TC High School and several other school districts who received grant funding had to adjust, restructure, and reprioritize based on the most vital requirements of each of their individual communities. “This past year, the YouthCorp program has been sustained through generous partnerships and local grants. With this most recent CLC grant application, TC High School wanted to position as much of the overall grant resources to go directly to our students with a focus on delivering and sustaining high quality programs with high quality staff. Our YouthCorp and other offerings will be the cornerstone of investment and sustainability over the next four years of this grant,” Mr. Morgan emphasized.

Northwest Michigan is working diligently to bring resources into our region and this round of CLC funding is evidence of our need and collective commitment to creating a bright future for our youth,” remarked Superintendent Jim Feil. “TCAPS is grateful for the additional resources coming to our District and others, is committed to improving student achievement and success, and looks forward to continuing our partnerships in the community to support our youth,” added Mr. Feil.

The Grant Program's focus is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for youth attending low-performing schools.  Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math.  In addition, 21st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic component of the program. The 21st CCLC Program is a key component of the No Child Left Behind Act.
