Traverse City Area Public Schools salutes the accomplishments of all area educators who were recently honored as a 2009 Outstanding Educator of the Year. Four Traverse City Area Public Schools’ employees were among the honorees to receive this prestigious award. These educators will be honored at the annual awards ceremony held on Tuesday, June 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Dennos Museum, Milliken Auditorium, on the Northwestern Michigan College campus, 1701 East Front Street.

The following employees were recognized for their dedication to all TCAPS’ students, the community, and their colleagues:

  • Kathy Angove and Michelle Van Kleek, Traverse City East Middle School Teachers

TC East Middle School Principal Glenn Solowiej notes, “TC East Middle School offers the community a full roster of outstanding educators - two of which have been recognized by this year's program initiated by the TC Chamber of Commerce.  Kathy Angove, 7th Grade Language Arts Teacher, and Michelle Van Kleek, 8th Grade Special Education Teacher are exceptional and deserving representatives nominated by parents, students and peers.” Mr. Solowiej also stated, “I would also like to recognize the outstanding contributions of Jackie Richer, Sign Language Interpreter from Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District. She has been a true asset to our school community.”

  • Matt Dumon, Traverse City West Senior High School Teacher

“Matt is one of the most creative teachers I have had the pleasure to observe as an administrator.  Students are engaged, challenged to think, and enjoy being in his class.  Mr. Dumon is an exemplary teacher and role model, truly deserving of this award,” stated TC West Senior High School Principal Joe Tibaldi.

  • Dan Tiesworth, Traverse City West Middle School Administrative Intern/Athletic Director

“Dan Tiesworth has done an exceptional job with our newly formed intramural program. His organizational skills, flexible problem solving abilities, and nurturing personality promoted a healthy, enthusiastic program for parents, children, and staff members,” commented TC West Middle School Principal Pam Alfieri. “Mr. Tiesworth also worked diligently with the eighth grade students, parents, and staff creating a caring, learning environment for all. He goes above and beyond the call of duty time and time again!”

  • Marilynn Eldred, Old Mission Peninsula School Secretary

“With 26 years at Old Mission Peninsula School, Marilynn Eldred is the kindly daytime mom to hundreds; the competent assistant to many; a patient and all-knowing mentor to our families; and the calm, reassuring voice on the phone,” states one Old Mission Peninsula School Parent. “ On top of attendance, hundreds of phone calls, paperwork, orders and copying, the school secretary must serve and support an entire building of people, young and old alike. At the end of the day, Marilynn will look at the next person in line at her desk with a smile on her face as though her day was just beginning and ask ‘How can I help you?’ She does this with grace deserving of recognition.”

tiative is facilitated by the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District in partnership with the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and the TBA Credit Union. The Outstanding Educator of the Year Award Program was started by the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce in 1984 and nominations are accepted from throughout a five county region. Out of numerous nominations received, these TCAPS employees are four out of the top ten educators to be honored this year.
