Traverse City Area Public Schools has made reducing children’s exposure to diesel exhaust and the amount of air pollution created by diesel school buses a high priority. With the help of a grant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean School Bus USA program, TCAPS is well on its way to achieving its goal.
The retrofitting of TCAPS’ fleet of 120 buses with EPA approved catalytic mufflers, which use a diesel oxidation catalyst technology to reduce exhaust emissions began on October 10th and is expected to be complete by November 15th. All work is being performed by a contractor at the TCAPS Transportation Department. The District’s buses have also begun using the new Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel, which will also help to create cleaner emissions.
