Students from Traverse City Area Public Schools participated in the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s annual academics summer workshop held at Michigan State University from August 3 – 7, 2008. Over 500 students from throughout the Midwest honed their journalistic skills in writing, photography, graphics, layout and design, broadcasting, video production and Web design during the workshop. The following students attended the summer workshop: Traverse City Central High School: Lydia Belanger, Jack Hagen, Elise Kaufmann, Kayla Kester, Emily Mumford, Joe Murray, Korinne Travis, Erin Wiggins and Patrick Heflin. Lydia Belanger won the Spartan Award, the highest journalism award in the state, for advanced writing, Jack Hagen won an Awards of Excellence for advanced writing, and Elise Kaufmann won an Award of Excellence for Photography. Traverse City West Senior High School: Connor Kostrzewa won an Award of Excellence in the multi media category. Traverse City East Middle School: Lauren Murray, Sanders McKenzie Traverse City High School: Sierra Porter won an Award of Excellence for design and graphics. Traverse City East Middle School teacher Jody Mackey taught journalism fundamentals at the workshop, Traverse City High School Teacher Nancy Potter was a student counselor, and Traverse City Central High School Teacher Missi Yeomans assisted in teaching and editing for the advanced writing class.
