The Fourth Annual Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium (NMMESS) will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Hagerty Conference Center at the Great Lakes Campus of Northwestern Michigan College. An awards ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will include awards for outstanding math and science students nominated by teachers from around the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District. Top performing students on the Chemistry and Biology Olympiad exams will also be recognized at the awards ceremony.
The Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium (NMMESS) is open to all math and/or science students ranging from upper elementary (grades 4-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12) in the five county Traverse Bay Region. At NMMESS, students present projects that answer a scientific, mathematical, or engineering question, or solve a problem. A committee of local secondary educators, college educators, and business/industry professionals review the student projects and presentations. Monetary prizes will be awarded to outstanding high school research projects. Visitors and participants are encouraged to ask the students about their measurement techniques, collected data, and presented results.
Refreshments will be served. Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH program, American Proficiency Institute, the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, and Northwestern Michigan College co-sponsor this event. The Chemistry and Biology Olympiad awards are sponsored by Dr. Peter D. Fedor and Great Lakes Eye Consultants.
