On Friday, April 25, 2008, Traverse City West Senior High School will kick off its Freshman Mentoring and Transition Program with a reception for students who have been selected as Freshman Mentors for the 2008 – 2009 school year. The reception begins at 10:00 a.m. in the school auditorium and commons area. Mentors will be provided with information about the program, a vision for next year, and a description of what their role will be in implementing the Freshman Mentor Program.
The Freshman Mentor Program is designed to ease the transition for incoming ninth grade students during their first year in high school by helping students feel safe and comfortable in their new environment and to ensure successful academic achievement. The mentoring program offers new students the opportunity to build relationships with older students who can share their experiences and advice on settling in to a new learning environment.
By acting as role models and leaders to other students, the Freshman Mentors will also benefit from the program through increased self-confidence and a deeper connection to the school.
