Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH (SMT) program will host former NASA Chief Scientist Dr. Kathryn Clark on Friday, April 25th, 2008, at Central Grade School’s Lars Hockstad Auditorium, 301 W. Seventh Street. Dr. Clark’s presentation, “To Boldly Go: NASA's Exploration Missions” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Clark will discuss past, present, and future NASA Space Missions and in particular look at the feasibility of sending humans to Mars. Clark’s presentation will include photos and video from NASA.
Ticket prices are $5.00 in advance or $8.00 at the door. Ticket sales for this event will benefit the SCI-MA-TECH program.
Dr. Clark spent four years at NASA Headquarters, two years as NASA’s Chief Scientist for the International Space Station Program, and two years as NASA’s Chief Scientist for the Human Exploration & Development of Space Enterprise. Dr. Clark is particularly interested in human missions to Mars and how to overcome the health and safety issues connected with sending astronauts to Mars. Dr. Clark received both her Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan and then joined the faculty in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology in 1993. She is currently continuing her education with the University of Michigan by working toward a Master of Science degree in Geological Science and studying Russian. Dr. Clark is also president of Docere, a consulting company specializing in science and education. Dr. Clark has been awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest honor NASA accords to non-government personnel, the Outstanding International Award from Women in Aerospace, and has been inducted into the National Women's Museum. She is also a pilot and is a member of the International Society of Women Pilots.
