Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce that Chris Michalowski has been named head girls’ varsity tennis coach at Traverse City West Senior High School. Mr. Michalowski, tennis director at the Grand Traverse Resort, has been a key figure in developing tennis locally and bringing a variety of tennis tournaments and programs that have received national acclaim from both the United States Tennis Association, (USTA), and the United States Tennis Professionals Association, (USPTA) to the area.

 

Mr. Michalowski, better known as Mick by the local community, has a long list of accomplishments and awards, including being named the USPTA Michigan Tennis Professional of the Year in 2003 and 2005; recipient of a 2006 USPTA Michigan Star Award; recipient of a 2006 USPTA/USTA National Community Service Award and the 2007 “Cap Leighton Tennis Professional of the Year Award.”

 

Most recently, Mick partnered with the TCAPS Every Step Counts program to bring Rallyball, a leadup game to tennis, to all the elementary schools and to create the USTA Tennis Academy in partnership with Traverse City West Senior High School to offer a summer program. The Rallyball program was rated the number one program in the nation by USTA, involving over 600 elementary students.

 

Patti Tibaldi, Traverse City West Senior High School Athletic Director had this to say, “Beyond Mick’s incredible accomplishments in the tennis world, he has such a passion for the game and enthusiasm for working with young people. Traverse City West Senior High School could not ask for a more qualified, positive, and dedicated coach than Mick. I have no doubt that he will offer our young women both tremendous knowledge of the sport while still developing character and leadership.”
