Norris Elementary School has been selected as one of 26 statewide schools receiving the MEEMIC Foundation for the future of Education mini-grant. On Friday, January 25, 2008, Merrill Harvitt of the Harvitt Insurance Agency in Traverse City and representative of the MEEMIC Foundation will present the award to Norris Elementary School at a small presentation scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the school library.

Grant monies will go towards the purchase of Dr. Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline materials. Norris students, staff, families, and community will benefit socially, emotionally, and academically through the implementation of the Seven Powers of Self Control, the Seven Basic Skills of Discipline, and the Seven Life Values as outlined in Conscious Discipline. Based on current brain research and developmentally appropriate management practices, students and staff will build effective communications skills and higher level thinking skills, thus experiencing stronger more meaningful relationships.

The Harvitt Agency regularly circulates information about the funding opportunities available through the MEEMIC Foundation by distributing grant applications at the local schools. Created in 1992, the non-profit MEEMIC Foundation for the Future of Education offers mini-grants of up to $2500 to Michigan educators. For information about the mini-grant, go to www.meemic.com.
