TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH program, located at Traverse City Central High School, and the Convergence Education Foundation in conjunction with The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary proudly present a unique teacher workshop opportunity. Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Building for the Classroom will be offered December 7-8, 2007 at Northwestern Michigan College’s (NMC) Great Lakes Water Studies Institute in Traverse City. At this workshop, teachers will learn how to build an underwater ROV, learn how to incorporate ROVs into classroom curriculum and leave the workshop with all of the materials needed to build one fully functioning ROV. Within the confines of the workshop participants will be exposed to the different engineering challenges faced in the submarine environment and how ROVs can be used in other disciplines.  

Twenty-four teachers from across the state will attend this workshop at NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute. Educators from the SCI-MA-TECH program and representatives from the Convergence Education Foundation, The Great Lakes Water Studies Institute and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary will lead the workshop. Also present at this workshop will be Traverse City Central High School students who have constructed ROVs the last two years. The workshop will conclude with ROV testing in the Civic Center pool during the afternoon of Saturday, December 8, 2007.
