Third and fourth grade students from Cherry Knoll Elementary School celebrated Veteran’s Day on November 13, 2007 with Iraqi Veteran, Mr. Timothy Olson. Mr. Olson recently retired from the Air Force having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The presentation focused on patriotism, one of the Core Democratic Values taught in the social studies curriculum. Mr. Olson gave a brief history of the flag, shared related stories, demonstrated how the flag should be folded, the proper way to raise and lower the flag, and discussed how important the United States flag is. This was especially valuable to the fourth grade students who have the daily responsibility of raising and lowering the flag at Cherry Knoll Elementary School. It was both an honor and a pleasure to have Mr. Olson share with the students the importance of showing respect to our country’s finest treasure.
