Traverse City West Senior High School’s Intro to Dance class has a new twist this year. To challenge the students to better understand Social Dance and to help them learn from a different vantage point, students will also take on the role of teacher.
Students in the Intro to Dance class have been taught the basics in Fox Trot, Waltz, Salsa, Mambo, Rumba, and Swing. From these dances, students have chosen their favorite, developed a lesson plan, and are now in the process of teaching the dance to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Glenn Loomis Elementary School and Willow Hill Elementary School.
The high school students taught their first lesson to the elementary students on Tuesday, November 27th. On Thursday, students will meet in class to review and revise their lesson plans based on what worked and what did not work and then return to the elementary schools on Friday, November 30th for a follow up lesson. The schedule for Friday’s lessons is as follows:
· 9:15 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. Willow Hill Elementary School
· 9:25 a.m. – 10:05 a.m. Glenn Loomis Elementary School
In addition, some of the high school students from the Intro to Dance class will be performing their favorite dances at the WoodSide Senior Living Center at 9:40 a.m. on Friday, November 30th.
