In addition to regular course work in the classroom, Silver Lake Elementary School is taking another approach to teach students the necessary steps for good writing and to improve students’ writing skills. On Tuesday, September 25, 2007 all K – 6 students will participate in a 6 + 1 Writing Fun Assembly from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. 

6 + 1 Writing Fun is an up beat, live action, language arts focused assembly hosted by professional speaker, comedian, and illusionist, Jim Mitchell. Students will learn and experience all 6 + 1 Writing Traits with interactive examples of how the traits apply to their own compositions. The 6 + 1 Writing Traits are: 1) Ideas, 2) Organization, 3) Voice, 4) Word Choice, 5) Sentence Fluency, 6) Conventions, and +1) Presentation. The Writing Traits are also emphasized in student writing workshops held daily in individual classrooms.
