In 2006-2007, Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH program, located at TC Central High School, received a $3,000 grant from Traverse City Light & Power (TCL&P). As a result of this generous support of TCL&P, additional research equipment and technology were purchased for the program and college visits and field trips were provided for students.
TCAPS’ SCI-MA-TECH program is offered to Grand Traverse area students in grades 10-12 who have a strong interest in math, science, and technology. SCI-MA-TECH offers students enhanced opportunities in math, science, and technology including special accelerated classes that utilize the latest in technology and research equipment. SCI-MA-TECH students also visit businesses and universities across the state, complete an internship in a career of their choice, hear from speakers, and participate in special extracurricular activities such as the FIRST Robotics Competition, the MATE Underwater ROV Competition, and the Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium.
SCI-MA-TECH’s rising seniors are currently completing summer internships throughout the Traverse City area at such businesses as Tower Automotive, Tellurex Corporation, and Teter Orthotics and Prosthetics.
