Elementary school students will have an opportunity to take part in a special summer reading program in lieu of summer school that will be funded through a Title I initiative at selected schools. Student in grades K-5 who are invited to participate will receive summer books and a bag of reading resources. Students in grades K-4 will have an opportunity to choose six books which they will be able to read and keep. Fifth grade students will receive an MP3 player that comes loaded with two audio books to listen to as they follow along with each of the printed versions they will also be given.

Throughout the summer, students participating in the program will receive encouraging post cards from their teachers and principal. A celebration of reading will be scheduled in the Fall when students return to school. At that time, children will be able to share their reflections and exchange their books with one another.

Parent meetings are scheduled to launch the summer reading program and allow students to pick up their bag and select their books of choice. Meetings will be held at the following schools:
