On Friday, May 18, 2007 students and staff from Westwoods Elementary School will jump rope their way to a healthy heart. At 10:40 a.m., World Jump Roping Champion, Rene Bibaud, will kick off the event at an assembly in the gymnasium where she will show the students her amazing jump roping skills. Afterwards, every student and staff member will join Rene outside in front of the school to jump rope simultaneously. The goal is to reach 21,000 jumps collectively. Staff and students will enjoy a “heart healthy” lunch provided by Westwoods Elementary School kitchen staff after the event.
The American Heart Association and TCAPS’ Every Step Counts Program worked together to ensure that enough jump ropes were available for every student and staff member to have their own rope. Every Step Counts is a Traverse City Area Public Schools initiative with a focus on increased physical activity and improved nutritional choices made possible by a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
