Interlochen Community School, like many schools in the country, has students and staff with a medical condition called diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the body has trouble regulating its blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels. It affects over 20 million children and adults in the United States alone.
First grader, George Lee, has diabetes and works hard every day to keep his blood glucose levels as close to normal as he can. To help him monitor his glucose levels, he checks his blood four times each day. By sharing his experiences with diabetes, George is helping staff and students understand diabetes better. On March 23rd, which was Diabetes Alert Day, George also checked Principal Sander Scott’s glucose levels for him. “Diabetes runs in my family, so I am very happy to have George help me check my glucose,” commented Scott.
