To bring deeper meaning to the fifth grade curriculum covering Africa, TCAPS’ Fifth Grade Talented and Gifted (TAG) students are learning global geography in a humanitarian way. Ms. Jaye Lynn Trapp’s fifth grade class has developed a connection with Uganda, Africa through periodic letters received by Margaret Mimnaugh, who is serving in the Peace Corps in a small village called Bulera in Uganda.
Through Margaret’s letters and the stories she shares, students have gained insight into what life is like in Bulera. For the past several years Central Grade School has held fundraisers to send school supplies to students in Uganda. Currently Ms. Trapp’s fifth grade class is collecting maps and beach ball globes from Michigan Geographic Alliance to send to Bulera Primary School in Uganda. In addition to sending school supplies to the school, Ms. Trapp’s students are also exchanging letters with the students in Bulera.
“I look forward to providing my students with the opportunity to connect with the students at the Bulera Primary School in the Buganda Kingdom,” commented Ms. Trapp. “My hope is that students in both countries will learn that the world is bigger than their own neighborhood.”
