Spring is in the air which means it is time for Long Lake Elementary School’s annual Spring Carnival. Friday, May 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Long Lake Elementary School will hold a family-friendly event for all ages complete with bounce houses, games, cake walk, dunk tank, silent auction, raffles and so much more.

Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education is pleased to announce the 2012-2013 Retirement Recognition Celebration honoring all this year’s retiring employees of Traverse City Area Public Schools (a list of retirees is attached). The celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. at the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center, 412 Webster Street, on the second floor in the Curriculum Rooms.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce Erich Wangeman has accepted the position of choir director at Traverse City West Senior High School effective for the 2013/2014 school year.

A recently enacted Michigan law amended the Revised School Code (MCL 380.1147), which changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten. Currently, a student must be five years old on or before December 1^st to be eligible for enrollment to kindergarten. New legislation will change the “cut‐off” date and will be gradually phased‐in over three years; changing the requirement by one month each year. The changes will be implemented in the following manner:

Achievement is a First for Grand Traverse County

On Thursday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m., Eastern Elementary School will host its Heroes in Our Community Closing Ceremony. Students will present their projects and introduce their partners to the school. The event will be held in the Eastern Elementary School gymnasium.

On Thursday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m., the Traverse City Music Boosters will hold their annual Music Boosters Benefit Concert. Students from TC East Middle School, TC West Middle School, TC Central High School and TC West Senior High School students will perform. The event will take place in the TC Central High School gymnasium.

On Friday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m., The TC Central High School Student Senate will sponsor a four mile trail run along the buggy, beautiful Boardman River.

TC West Senior High School junior Mallory Heiges was selected the winner of the Coast Guard City Sculpture Contest. Mallory created a Kinetic Helicopter design that will be displayed in a prominent location in downtown Traverse City.

On Saturday, May 11 and Saturday, May 18, the first TCAPS Makerspace will be open from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Old Mission Peninsula School.

On Saturday, May 18, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Eastern Elementary School will host a Trash to Treasures Garage Sale and Wheels Exchange event. The event will be held in the Eastern Elementary School Gymnasium.
