Erin Fluharty and Iesha Robinson Honored for Accomplishments in a Non-Traditional Career and Technical Education Program
Two Traverse City West Senior High School students were among the 22 students from across the state selected to receive the Breaking Traditions Award. The Breaking Traditions Awards were established by the Michigan Department of Education of Career and Technical Education to recognize students who have been successful in Career and Technical Education (CTE) program areas that are non-traditional for their gender.

Friday, May 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Long Lake Elementary School will hold a family-friendly event for all ages complete with bounce houses, games, cake walk, dunk tank, silent auction, raffles and so much more.

Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education is pleased to announce the 2012-2013 Retirement Recognition Celebration honoring all this year’s retiring employees of Traverse City Area Public Schools (a list of retirees is attached). The celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. at the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center, 412 Webster Street, on the second floor in the Curriculum Rooms.

First and Fifth Grade Students Work with Local Artists to Create Dumpster Masterpieces
On Saturday, May 18, approximately 50 Westwoods Elementary School first and fifth grade students will create dumpster art as part of American Waste’s Dumpsters on Parade. At 9:00 a.m. dump trucks will deliver 18 sketched dumpsters ready for the students to add their touch of color. This community service project is a collaboration between TCAPS, Downtown Traverse City Association, American Waste and the vibrant local artists’ community.

A recently enacted Michigan law amended the Revised School Code (MCL 380.1147), which changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten. Currently, a student must be five years old on or before December 1st to be eligible for enrollment to kindergarten. New legislation will change the “cut‐off” date and will be gradually phased‐in over three years; changing the requirement by one month each year. The changes will be implemented in the following manner:

Achievement is a First for Grand Traverse County
On Thursday, May16, at 2:05 p.m., TC East Middle School will hold a recognition ceremony to honor the school’s MathCounts Club for achieving National Gold Level Status. They are the first middle school in Grand Traverse County to receive this designation. Only 204 middle/junior high schools in the nation achieved this status for 2013.

Students from TC East Middle School, TC West Middle School, TC Central High School and TC West Senior High School students will perform. The event will take place in the TC Central High School gymnasium.

Youker, Schwartz, Waters and Constant to be inducted Friday, May 31
On Friday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m., TC Central High School will induct its newest members to the Hall of Fame. The class of 2013 includes John Youker, Matthew Schwartz, Rick Waters and Jon Constant. The induction will be held in the TC Central High School cafeteria, 1150 Milliken Dr. An ice cream social will be held at 6:00 p.m.

Taylor Weckstein and TC Central High School Honored
On Monday, May 13, TC Central High School and one of its students will be recognized by the TCAPS Board of Education. TC Central High School Freshman Taylor Weckstein will be honored for being named Distinguished Finalist in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Michigan for the creation of her charitable organization Giving 1 Family at a Time, G.1.F.T. TC Central High School will be recognized for its first year designation as a Michigan Green School.

Christine Guitar Chosen from Pool of Highly Qualified Candidates to Join Communications Team
Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to welcome Christine Guitar as the district’s new Chief of Communications. Since 2010, Christine has served as Communications Director for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance in Washington, DC. As Director, Christine was responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive, national communications program for the EPA’s enforcement, compliance, National Environmental Policy Act and environmental justice programs. Prior to that, Christine had the opportunity to serve as Communications Specialist in the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice and as Team Leader/Regions Coordinator in the EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery.
