Traverse City High School students will participate in The Son of Blues concert to be held at the Dennos Museum, 1701 E. Front Street on Saturday, this evening, February 3rd, at 8:00 p.m.

On Friday, February 3rd, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Cherry Knoll Elementary School will host a Winter Family Fun Night and Health Fair. Students, families, friends, and staff are invited to this free event. Indoor and outdoor activities will be available as well as the opportunity to visit information booths sponsored by local businesses in the fields of heath and wellness.

On Thursday, April 12th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Traverse City Central High School will host a ‘Hair for HOPE’ event, to benefit Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program, and Locks of Love. Each of these programs depends upon human hair donors to create wigs and hairpieces for adults and children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. TC Central High School senior Nikki Schweitzer initiated the project, inspired by, and in memory of, her Aunt Lori, who passed away due to breast cancer.

On Thursday, January 12th, Joseph Sobeck, a seventh grade student at TC West Middle School, won the school-level competition of the 24th Annual National Geographic Bee. Joseph was declared the School Champion and moves one step closer to a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Also taking top honors in the Bee were runner up, Hannah Trolz, and third place finisher Francesca Sydow.

Willow Hill Elementary School will host a ‘Green Summit’ on Thursday, February 16th, at 5:30 p.m. in their Library. Parents are invited to become involved in planning for the future of the learning extension opportunities at Willow Hill Elementary School, made available through a recent grant award and parent donation.

On Wednesday, January 11th, TC East Middle School hosted a National Geographic Bee competition for the school’s 6th – 8th grade geography classes. The top ten students advanced to the next round, answering geographical questions until two students remained. Seventh grade student Erin Huls and sixth grade student Paige Langum were the final competitors, who were each asked the tie-breaking question, “Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, is located in the Rhineland region of what country?” Erin Huls answered, “Germany”, and earned the title, ‘School Champion’. Erin will take a written test to qualify for the State level competition of the National Geographic Bee.

On Thursday, February 9th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Traverse City Area Public Schools will host an International School at Bertha Vos Information Night. The event will be held at the Acme Township Hall, and is open to all area students and families interested in learning more about the TCAPS International School at Bertha Vos.

Westwoods Elementary School 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes will perform two winter music programs on Thursday, February 16th, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Students will share songs, dances and instrumental accompaniments to a few of the many songs they have learned this year in their General Music classes.

The Kindergarten Parent Information Night events will provide parents of students who will be kindergarten age this fall, an opportunity to tour classrooms and gather information about TCAPS kindergarten options for the 2012-2013 school year.

On Thursday, January 12th,Willow Hill Elementary School Teacher Kim Chase received a $500 mini-grant from community partners, TBA Credit Union and MEEMIC Insurance/Harvett Agency. Mrs. Chase was awarded the grant, which will be used to purchase trade books for the Willow Hill Elementary School Literacy Library.

Staff from Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Students in Transition Empowerment Program (STEP) would like to thank the generous contribution made to their program by the grandchildren of a local resident, Ann Hackett, a member of Grace Episocopal Church. Ann’s grandchildren, Anna and Theodore Boulukos, and Haley and Jameson Smith donated $209.77 to the STEP program this past December. The grandchildren, inspired by their grandmother, donated the sum total of their personal coin jars.

The Exhibit will be featured at the Dennos Museum Center, 1701 E. Front Street, now through Sunday, April 1st.
