Westwoods Elementary School has partnered with Higher Ground Coffee Company to help raise money for the Run Across Ethiopia Global Foundation. On Tuesday, October 5th, at 1:30 p.m. staff from Higher Ground Coffee, will visit the Westwoods Elementary kitchen staff to train them on how to make espresso drinks. The espresso drinks will be available for sale to teachers and parents with all proceeds to benefit the Run Across Ethiopia Global Foundation.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is now offering an Ojibwe Language and Culture Course. Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade may earn high school credit after earning a passing grade in this Native language course. This course provides a great opportunity for students to learn the original Anishinaabe language of the Odawa and Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes area and to develop an appreciation for a Native language and culture. Students will use the language in the classroom for greetings and daily routines, becoming familiar with its sound system, writing system, daily vocabulary, and phrases.

Today, Friday, September 24th, Willow Hill Elementary School will observe Constitution Day with a re-enactment by the Traverse Bay 912 Project. The Traverse Bay 912 Project is a group of over 100 members, which dedicates itself to the study of the Constitution. The presentation will include re-enacting Founding Fathers and Mothers in 10-minute skits with a 10-minute question and answer period to follow. Founding Father and Mother characters are:

At the Monday, September 27th, Board of Education meeting, TCAPS’ Superintendent Steve Cousins will review recommended TCAPS Tomorrow Strategic Planning Process for the 2010-2011 school year. The strategic planning process will begin in October and continue throughout the school year with phases and timelines that focus on future scanning and planning.

On Friday, September 24th, Traverse City West Senior High School in partnership with the National Writers Series will host best selling author, James Bradley. Bradley is the celebrated author of #1 New York Times Best Seller “Flags of Our Fathers,” recently made into a critically acclaimed film directed by Clint Eastwood. The book is the true story of the six men, including Bradley’s father, who raised the flag in 1945 on Iwo Jima.

Parents of TCAPS students in grades 6th – 12th can keep up-to-date on their student’s day-to-day progress in school. Assignments and marking period averages are available for viewing in pinnacle Internet Viewer (PIV) as teachers enter grades. In addition, parents can configure to have emails sent to them when certain conditions are met related to their child's grade or simply receive regular updates.

High school students from Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) who are applying to colleges can now request transcripts online through Secure Transcript. Secure Transcript is the safe, paperless way to send official transcripts directly to colleges and scholarship funds. For colleges that accept transcripts electronically, a confirmation email will be sent to the requestor once the college receives the transcript.

On Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th, Traverse City West Senior High School will host the 16th Annual Traverse City West Collegiate Softball Tournament. Softball teams competing will be Central Michigan University, Notre Dame, University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University. On Monday, September 20th, the Traverse City West Senior High School and Traverse City Central High School Athletic Departments invite the Traverse City community and all athletes to a special presentation by Founder and President of the American Athletic Institute John Underwood. Underwood has devised an alcohol and drug prevention program that educates and trains parents, athletes, and schools to be leaders in recognizing and dealing with the issues of social drinking and underage alcohol and drug use. Every parent, athlete, and coach can benefit from Underwood’s presentation that will take place at the Traverse City West Senior High School Auditorium, 5376 North Long Lake Road, at 7:00 p.m.

The Traverse City West Senior High School Titan Football Team will hold Youth Night at the Friday, September 17th, football game. Interested students in grades 2nd through 6th are invited to meet the TC West Football Team at 5:00 p.m. in the west end zone of the football field (close to TCAPS’ Montessori at Glenn Loomis) and participate in learning football skills such as throwing, catching, tackling, and scoring touchdowns.

Traverse City Music Boosters invites all parents of TCAPS students who are interested in music or involved in school music programs to attend this year’s Annual Membership Meeting on September 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the TC Central High School Orchestra Room. A special student performance is planned in conjunction with the meeting and refreshments will be served.
