News items from Traverse City Area Public Schools

On Tuesday, September 7th, Eastern Elementary School staff members and new principal, Jana Duguay plan to start the new school year off with enthusiasm and a focus on bonding as a school community. From 8:45 a.m. until the start of school at 9:00 a.m., Mrs. Duguay and her staff will be outside the building to welcome students as they arrive at school. Students arriving will gather in the gymnasium until the morning bell announces the start of the school day. Mrs. Duguay will lead staff and students outside to the flagpole where the entire school community will sing songs and celebrate the first day of the school year.

The Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education Retreat scheduled for Monday, August 30th, will be held at the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, 202 East Grandview Parkway, in the Steelcase Conference Room. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. Due to the location change the meeting will not be recorded or televised.

On Sunday, September 26th, 2010 the Traverse City West Senior High School Boy’s Basketball Team will host a golf outing at Mistwood Golf Course. There will be a four person scramble including cart with 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.There will be raffles, prizes, and contests held throughout the day.

General Educational Development (GED) Testing will be offered at Traverse City Central High School for all persons, 18 years of age or older, seeking to complete their high school equivalency requirements (under special circumstances 16 and 17 year olds may be admitted to take the GED Test.). To qualify the person must have been out of a regular school program for one year or their class must have graduated.

Traverse City Area Public Schools would like to announce orientation for Traverse City Central High School incoming freshmen on Thursday, August 26th. Orientation for students with the last name beginning with A-K will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Students with the last name beginning with L-Z will take place from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Westwood Elementary School will feature multiple “looping” classrooms this year.  Looping is a concept whereby the same group of children move with the same teacher from one grade level to the next, usually staying together for a 2-year cycle.  Looping was piloted last year when a group of first grade students moved into second grade and kept their same teacher.  It was extremely popular with students and parents as well as the teacher, Mrs. Johnson.

On Tuesday, August 24th, Northwest Michigan STEP Regional Coordinator and TCAPS’ District STEP Liaison Joan Abbott will accept the delivery of 480 backpacks scheduled to arrive at 8:00 a.m. at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District’s Career Tech Center, 880 Parsons Road.

On Monday, August 23rd, Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Board of Education invites the community to meet TCAPS’ new superintendent, Steve Cousins, at a welcome reception to be held prior to the School Board Meeting. The Welcome Reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. at TC West Senior High School Commons, 5376 North Long Lake Road. The Board meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the school library.

The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) has recognized Traverse City Area Public Schools teacher, Jaye Lynn Trapp, as the 2010 Distinguished Teacher for her extraordinary commitment to teaching and learning of geography in the classroom. Her award was based on her innovative integration of geography into the 5th grade curriculum.

TC Central Tennis Center will host a full day of “free” Tennis Clinics on Saturday, August 14th with Sergio Casal, founder of Academia Sanchez-Casal, world leading tennis academies. Special clinics will be conducted for coaches, junior players, and adults. Additionally, a Pro-Am Exhibition will be held during the day.

At its June 26, 2006, Board of Education meeting, the Board adopted a Resolution to designate November in every year, commencing November 2007, as the regular election date. Therefore, the Organizational meeting of the Board was moved from July to January. The schedule below shows the dates Board meetings will be held from August 9, 2010 – January 10, 2011.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce the selection of Traverse City West Senior High School Dance Team as featured performers in the 77th Annual FedEx Orange Bowl Halftime Show in Miami, Florida in January 2011. This football extravaganza will be televised on January 3rd, and pits two of the top Bowl Championship Series (BCS) teams against each other in the newly re-named Sun Life Stadium.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (Aug.4, 2010) – The State today released a “report card” of how schools, including Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS), are meeting federal and state standards for student achievement. Today’s results showed TCAPS’ District met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measures in all areas for elementary, middle, and high school levels. Each of TCAPS’ elementary and middle schools as well as TC Central High School and TC West Senior High School made AYP. Among TCAPS’ schools that received grades, almost 90% received a grade of “A”, and others received a “B” as measured by Education YES! Traverse City High School did not receive an Ed Yes! grade or make AYP because the State does not calculate a grade for schools with small populations (less than 30 students in 11th grade) and the school did not meet requirements for graduation rate.
