Today the Michigan Department of Education released statewide results for eleventh grade students who participated in the State’s Michigan Merit Exam (MME). District results showed Traverse City Area Public Schools’ students outperformed the State in the percentage of eleventh grade students who met or exceeded proficiency standards for all subject tests including reading, math, writing, science, and social studies.

On Thursday, July 22nd, Cherry Knoll Elementary School Summer Adventure Camp will host a 10th Anniversary Celebration with a Hawaiian Luau. Cherry Knoll families and community members are invited to take part in this free event that will include dinner, a bounce house, and face painting.

General Educational Development (GED) Testing will be offered at Traverse City Central High School for all persons, 18 years of age or older, seeking to complete their high school equivalency requirements (under special circumstances 16 and 17 year olds may be admitted to take the GED Test.). To qualify the person must have been out of a regular school program for one year or their class must have graduated.

On Thursday, July 8th, students from the Traverse City Area Pubic Schools SCI-MA-TECH program will sell rubber ducks throughout the day to individuals that would like to take part in the National Cherry Festival Annual Boardman River Duck Race. The duck race will launch at 4:00 p.m. at the Hannah Lay Park at the Union Street Bridge, and finish at the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce at the Cass Street Bridge.

Traverse City West Senior High School is pleased to announce Kristen Nolan as the new head girls’ golf coach. Kristen is a special education teacher at Traverse City West Middle School and served in a volunteer capacity as the assistant golf coach last year. Kristen received her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and her Masters degree from Michigan State University. Kristen has a strong background in both golf and gymnastics and has given golf lessons at both youth and adult levels at the Grand Traverse Resort, Shanty Creek, and the Traverse City Country Club.

Traverse City West Senior High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Ross Deye as the new head boys’ cross-country coach. Ross will fill the opening left by longtime Coach Dan Zemper. Ross has coached boys’ and girls’ cross-country for the past twenty-seven years, twenty-four of those years in the Sylvania City Schools in Ohio. Four state titles, thirty-two league titles, twenty-one district titles, and thirteen regional titles were won between the boys’ and girls’ teams during his tenure. Ross was named State Coach of the Year in boys’ cross- country in 1994 and nominated as the 2010 Career Coach of the Year by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross-Country Coaches.

Old Mission Peninsula School has received a Community Foundation ACE Endowment grant entitled “Books for me to read and share!” This grant will be used to purchase 300 paperback books that will support literacy by allowing 18 children in need of additional reading support to build home libraries of books to read at their own level. For the 2010-2011 school year there will be 70 books for each kindergarten child selected for the program, 110 books for each first grade child selected, and 120 books for each second grade child selected to participate in the program.

Traverse City Central High School has won the 2009-2010 Big North Conference All-Sports Award, besting second place by 10 points in the overall Big North Conference (BNC) standings. This is the third consecutive year that TC Central High School has won the award, based upon each of the 21 BNC sports offered. The BNC All-Sports Award originated in the 1997-1998 school year, the same year the Big North Conference was formed. TC Central High School has won the All-Sports Award 10 of the past 13 years.

On Monday, June 14, 2010, TCAPS’ Board of Education voted to authorize a three-year contract with Stephen E. Cousins, to serve as Superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools effective July 26, 2010 through June 30, 2013. Additionally, the Board appointed Dr. Jayne Mohr to serve as Interim Superintendent for the period of July 1 – July 25, 2010.
