The TCAPS Board of Education has directed the Michigan Leadership Institute to post a Superintendent Position Announcement, which describes selection criteria, salary and contract information, and application procedures and timelines for the superintendent search process. (See attached announcement.)

In celebration of March is Reading Month, Willow Hill Elementary School students have been keeping track of home reading during the month of March. For motivation, students were asked to share facts, songs, and skits about insects. Every morning the school halls were infested with a garden full of bugs while students shared their bugs and insects.

Traverse City High School students can enjoy a beautiful new school entryway thanks to the hard work and caring efforts of Sheryl Chandler, former Traverse City High School Custodian. Although Sheryl is now a custodian at Central Grade School, she really wanted to give the students at her former school something nice to brighten each day. With the help of local donations, Sheryl set to work to create a bright and inviting new entryway to Traverse City High School. All of her efforts were done on her own time after school hours.

On Saturday, April 24th, Traverse City Music Boosters will hold their annual used instrument sale at the Traverse City West Middle School Little Theater. The sale is open to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Families with instruments to sell can drop them off between 9:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. to be appraised. Checks and unsold instruments may be picked up from 4:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. Fifteen percent of each sale will go to Traverse City Music Boosters to help fund their scholarship program.

On Thursday, March 25th, at 7:00 p.m., members from the Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education will meet for an informal coffee conversation regarding TCAPS’ district and other education related topics. Board members will be available in the downstairs level of Horizon Books, 243 East Front Street, to converse with interested community members.

On Saturday, April 10th, Traverse City West Senior High School will host Trashion at 9:00 p.m. in the TC West Senior High School Commons, 5376 North Long Lake Road. The fashion show features wearable art designs created by students from TC West Senior High School and other local schools. The designs were created using a multitude of recyclable and alternative materials. Students will strut their “wears” to edgy, high-energy music in fashion show style format.

On Saturday, April 10th, students and staff from TCAPS’ middle school and high school music ensembles will host a LIVE Student-produced Telethon Fundraiser on TCAPS’ TV Charter Cable Channel 98. The Telethon will broadcast LIVE from Noon until 9:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 24th, at 1:30 p.m., Long Lake Elementary School students will present a cash donation to the American Red Cross at a special presentation in the Long Lake Elementary School Gymnasium. To raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti, each classroom has been collecting spare change as part of the “Change of Life” program and a Papa John’s Pizza fundraiser was held.

On Friday, April 16th, students from Traverse City Central High School, Traverse City West Senior High School, and St. Francis High School will host an opening reception to showcase high school student photography that will be on display at the Warehouse Lounge April 16th, through the middle of May.

On Saturday, October 23rd, Traverse City East Middle School will host its 19th Annual East Extravaganza Craft Show from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Vendors interested in displaying their arts and crafts may rent a booth for $70.00 before April 1st and $80.00 April 1st and after. Each booth is an 8’ X 10’ space. Vendors are responsible to bring tables and chairs. Electricity will be available for $5.00 and vendors must bring their own heavy-duty electrical cord and tape to secure each cord.

On Wednesday, March 24th, 2009 National Cherry Festival Queen, Angela Sayler, will visit Willow Hill Elementary School in celebration of March is Reading Month. Queen Angela will read school announcements at 8:15 a.m. on the televised school morning announcements. Queen Angela will then be escorted to each classroom by Willow Hill Elementary Schools’ Prince Charlie Jeffrey and Princess Amalia Gaines to hand out bookmarks to students.

Traverse City East Middle School is proud to announce the Farm Bureau’s America and Me essay winners. As part of TCAPS’ curriculum all eighth grade students in the Academically Talented (AT) program participate in the America and Me contest. The contest is a personal narrative regarding the student’s choice of a Michigan hero.

Traverse City West Middle School is proud to announce Students of the Month for the month of March. Students are selected by TC West Middle School staff based on, but not limited to, excellence in the classroom, outstanding behavior while in school and/or school activities, outstanding improvement in behavior, citizenship or academics, or participation that is above and beyond the call of duty in a school event.
