On Wednesday, February 29th, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Willow Hill Elementary School third and fourth grade students will participate in an interactive Social Studies project called the Historic Mackinac on Tour program. The program focuses on early Michigan fur trade history in the Straits of Mackinac and features presenters dressed as French voyageurs, British redcoats, and other historic characters.

On Tuesday, March 6th, TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis will host a Wild About Books Assembly in their gymnasium. This interactive assembly will feature live animals from around the world, and will encourage responsible stewardship and respect of the earth’s natural resources.

Cherry Knoll Elementary School was recently awarded a $25,000 grant by the ‘Sprite Spark Parks for Schools Sweepstakes, presented by the Coca-Cola Company. The Sprite Spark Parks Project is a philanthropic initiative in which Sprite hopes to provide a ‘spark’ to different active spaces within communities across the country.

On Wednesday, March 14th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis PTO will host Family Arts Night. The free event will feature student and family visual art, performing art, and literary art displays, demonstrations, and performances.

On Tuesday, March 13th. from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Traverse City Area Public Schools will host an International School at Bertha Vos Information Night. The event will be held at the Acme Township Hall, and is open to all area students and families interested in learning more about the TCAPS International School at Bertha Vos.

On Wednesday, February 29th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Cherry Knoll Elementary School will host a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Proceeds will be used to purchase headsets and iPads for student use.

TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis will host Family, Fitness & Fun Night on Wednesday, February 29th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the school’s gymnasium and café. Students, family, staff, and community members are invited to participate in this free event.

On Tuesday, March 6th, Northern Michigan Psychiatric Services will deliver a presentation on “Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children and Adolescents” as part of the 10th Annual Teacher and Parent Education Series from Dr. Sander Weckstein, Board Certified Child, Adolescent, and General Psychiatrist. The presentation will run from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Traverse City Central High School Library Media Center, 1150 Milliken Drive.

On Monday, February 20th, Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative (GTSI) Program Coordinator Lorraine Austin presented TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis directresses Angela Stricker, Alicia Olson, Angie Ballmer, and Megan Hancock with a $1,500 grant award.

Traverse City Central High School’s talented women’s ensemble will perform in New York City during spring break this year, in the Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center. Community members, staff, and families are invited support Vocal Majority in their fundraising efforts this Thursday, February 23rd, at TC Central High School. A silent auction will be held before and during the TC Central High School vs. TC West Senior High School varsity boys basketball game. Proceeds from the silent auction will be used to offset students’ travel expenses related to the New York trip.

On Thursday, February 23rd, at 6:30 p.m., Courtade Elementary School will host a Kindergarten Parent Meeting. Interested families will receive information about enrollment for all available programs being offered at Courtade Elementary School for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Michigan State Police Department completed rigorous school bus inspections this month at TCAPS Transportation Department. One hundred and one TCAPS school buses were inspected over the course of five days. Following the inspections, TCAPS received a 100% passing rate, with compliments from the state inspector, for the condition of TCAPS buses and the professional mechanics on staff.

Long Lake Elementary School student Aubrie Deal recently traveled to Chicago to participate in the USA Track and Field (USATF) Midwest Zone Youth Indoor Track & Field Championships. Her event was the 800 meter run (1/2 mile). The top six runners qualified from each of four zones. Seventeen states were represented in Aubrie’s zone, wherein Aubrie came in 3rd with a time of 2:47, her personal best!

TCAPS is pleased to announce Latin Language Instruction classes are now available through the Learning Enrichment Activity Program (LEAP). All current 9th – 12th grade students and interested community members are invited to participate in this language enrichment program. Classes will begin the week of March 5th meeting bi-weekly through June 7th.

On Friday, February 24th, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., Cherry Knoll Elementary School will host Donuts with Dad, a social event sponsored by the Cherry Knoll Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization.

Willow Hill Elementary School Teacher Tricia Weston’s 2nd grade class has created a new Wee Deliver in-school mailing system. The student-run school-wide mail delivery system was created to give students, staff, and parents the opportunity to write traditional friendly letters to each other, while providing the students a creative venue for developing letter-writing and reading skills.

On Wednesday, February 29th, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Cherry Knoll Elementary School will host a Non-Fiction Learning Fair, an annual school event highlighting student projects based on favorite non-fiction books and stories.

TCAPS recognizes that families choose Traverse City Area Public Schools because we engage students in the most inspiring, supportive, and challenging learning experiences. In response to parent interests, TCAPS will offer an eastside Montessori program. TCAPS is pleased to announce a new Montessori program will be offered at Courtade Elementary School, and enrollments are being accepted for the 2012-2013 school year. Courtade offers the perfect location for Montessori with ample space for growth and innovation.

On Tuesday, February 14th, Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative (GTSI) Program Coordinator Lorraine Austin presented West Middle School Principal Pam Alfieri and teachers, Melanie Cypher and Linda Barker, with a mini-grant award in the amount of $758.50.
