Old Mission Peninsula School has received a Community Foundation ACE Endowment grant entitled “Books for me to read and share!” This grant will be used to purchase 300 paperback books that will support literacy by allowing 18 children in need of additional reading support to build home libraries of books to read at their own level. For the 2010-2011 school year there will be 70 books for each kindergarten child selected for the program, 110 books for each first grade child selected, and 120 books for each second grade child selected to participate in the program.

Traverse City Central High School has won the 2009-2010 Big North Conference All-Sports Award, besting second place by 10 points in the overall Big North Conference (BNC) standings. This is the third consecutive year that TC Central High School has won the award, based upon each of the 21 BNC sports offered. The BNC All-Sports Award originated in the 1997-1998 school year, the same year the Big North Conference was formed. TC Central High School has won the All-Sports Award 10 of the past 13 years.

On Monday, June 14, 2010, TCAPS’ Board of Education voted to authorize a three-year contract with Stephen E. Cousins, to serve as Superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools effective July 26, 2010 through June 30, 2013. Additionally, the Board appointed Dr. Jayne Mohr to serve as Interim Superintendent for the period of July 1 – July 25, 2010.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce four of its elementary schools have been accepted for the MiBLSi Co-Hort 7 Cycle for the 2010-2011 school year. This project is designed to help schools develop school-wide support systems in reading and behavior. The grant is a partnership between local schools and the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District. Traverse Heights Elementary School was awarded this three-year grant in January 2010.

Traverse City Area Public Schools in inviting Grand Traverse Area youth in grades 4 – 8 to participate in a Summer Fun Camp (SFC) recreational program. Students will have choices that include outdoor and indoor recreational games, arts and crafts, and enrichment activities each week.

On Monday June 7th, students from Traverse City West Senior High School will participate in Safe Kids North Shore & Injury Prevention Coalition Distracted Driving program throughout the day. Students will have the opportunity to drive a simulator while they do multi-tasking activities and take a sobriety test wearing goggles that simulate visual limitations while being legally intoxicated. At the end of their drive students will be able to see just how good (or bad) they really did.

Teams from Traverse City West Middle School and Traverse City West Senior High School competed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held from May 26th through May 29th, at Michigan State University in Lansing. The TC West Middle School team placed 15th out of 61 teams. Students were able to spend time with a South Korean Buddy Team and helped host Polish and German teams in Traverse City.

The Traverse City West Middle School Madrigal Singers, led by Phil Johnson, was chosen as the “Best School Music Mash-Up in America” contest winner based on its mash-up performance of "Cable Car (Over my Head)” by the Fray and "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5.Traverse City West Middle School Madrigal will receive $10,000 from Fruitables – a mash-up of fruit and vegetable juice – to help support the continuation of its music program.

Today, Friday, June 4th, Traverse City Central High School Freshman Paige Pfannenstiel will host her first book signing of her newly published four hundred page book "Skyline: The Opal Chance." The compelling book is about a community of eagles who have all the traits (good and bad) of humans.  Paige’s story was initially drafted as a writing assignment for her sixth grade class at TC East Middle School. She then continued to elaborate and write the story for the following two years. The book signing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Horizon Books, 243 East Front Street.

On Wednesday, June 9th, Courtade Elementary School Physical Education Specialist Vickie Keegstra will recognize students who have participated in the school Mileage Club. For the past twelve years students in kindergarten through fifth grade have participated in the Mileage Club by logging in miles that they have completed by running or walking during their physical education class. The school has logged in 4,251 miles in 4 weeks. The distance is equal to two times across the United States. Students are rewarded for every five miles completed. Students earn a “Heart Healthy Foot” that can be worn around their neck to display their accomplishment. Students that complete 25 miles receive a special shoelace necklace that can also be worn.

On Sunday, June 6th, Traverse City Central High School Yearbook staff will hold a community car wash fundraiser. The fundraiser will help student staff members offset their cost to attend Herff Jones Yearbook FUN d’Mentals Summer Workshop, June 28th through July 1st, at Michigan State University in Lansing. Student participants are responsible for their individual cost for the experience. The community car wash will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Oak Park Elementary School, 301 South Garfield Avenue.

Today, June 3rd, Westwoods Elementary School held story time with Kelly Stockfisch’s Wigglers Preschool. Preschoolers ranging in age from infant to two-years-old from the local community visited the Westwoods Elementary School Library for a short story. This was the first visit for the preschoolers to the school library. Westwoods Elementary School was excited to share the library time with community families.
