On Thursday, June 3rd, Eastern Elementary School third, fourth, and fifth grade students welcome guest speaker Rasheda Ali. Rasheda Ali is an internationally known author and speaker who will speak to the students about Parkinson’s disease. Rasheda is the daughter of Boxing Heavy Weight Champion Muhammad Ali, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. Rasheda was inspired by her father to write I’ll Hold Your Hand So You Won’t Fall - A Child’s Guide to Parkinson’s Disease by watching her own children interact with her father.

On Friday, June 4th, Eastern Elementary will host their annual family picnic. Eastern Elementary School families are invited to attend this event that will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. outside on the school grounds, 1600 Eastern Avenue. Picnic goers are asked to bring a blanket and/or folding chairs. The menu will include hotdogs with all the “fixings.” The cost is $2.10 for a student meal and $3.25 for an adult meal.

On May 25th, students from Traverse City Area Public Schools’ SCI-MA-TECH program along with students from across Northern Michigan presented research projects at the Sixth Annual Northern Michigan Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Symposium (NMMESS). At NMMESS, students presented projects that answered a scientific, mathematical, or engineering question, or solved a problem. A committee of local secondary educators, college educators, and business/industry professionals reviewed the student projects and presentations.

Today, Thursday, May 27th, Traverse City Area Public Schools will hold a press conference to announce the new TC Central High School Varsity Volleyball Coach. The press conference will be held at 3:15 p.m. at TC Central High School, located at 1150 Milliken Drive.

On Friday, May 28th, students at Eastern Elementary School will honor “Amazing Americans” by hosting a Wax Museum. Each fifth grade student has researched an “Amazing American” of his or her choice and will celebrate what makes them amazing by dressing up and posing as a wax statue. Each student statue will have the ability to be activated, which will allow them to move and recite a short speech about the “Amazing American” being portrayed. This event will take place from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the school gymnasium, 1600 Eastern Avenue.

Beginning Tuesday, June 2nd, Traverse City Area Public Schools’ TV/98 will broadcast Cooks for Kids, a series of nine 30-minute training programs that showcase the fact that children should have access to healthy food and be able to make healthy food choices at home, in school, and in the community. The program will showcase restaurants, schools, and home cooking segments to describe how cooks use tested techniques of preparing and serving healthful, appealing foods to children. This integrated look at the child’s total food experience is what makes Cooks for Kids unique.

May 31st There is no school scheduled for all Traverse City Area Public Schools’ staff and students on Monday, May 31st, due to Memorial Day Holiday.
June 11th School officially dismisses for all Traverse City Area Public Schools’ students for summer recess at the end of the school day on Friday, June 11th.

Now through Friday, June 4th, the Traverse City Central High School Key Club will host an Electronic Device Drive. The TC Central High School Key Club is helping to save the earth by recycling old electronic devices and also to raise money for future service projects. TC Central High School families and community members are invited to take part in the drive by donating old, broken phones, mp3 players, jewelry, and portable game devices. A collection station has been set up right outside of Mr. Trahair’s Office at TC Central High School, 1150 Milliken Drive.

On Friday, June 4th, TCAPS’ Montessori at Glenn Loomis will learn about acclaimed author E. William Oldenburg. Mr. Oldenburg’s son and daughter will visit TCAPS’ Montessori to speak to students in Ms. Hancock’s class who have been reading Mr. Oldenburg’s book, Potawatomi Indian Summer as part of their Michigan History studies.

On Thursday, May 27th, students at Traverse City West Senior High School will have the opportunity to participate in the school’s annual Beautification Day. TC West Senior High School classes can work outside on this day to beautify the trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants on the school grounds. Since TC West Senior High School initially opened all plants have been maintained by students throughout the years.

Traverse City Central High School SCI-MA-TECH and Honors Biology Teacher, Kelli Hannum-Spencer, has been named a 2010 Siemens Science, Technology, Engineer, and Mathematics (STEM) Fellow and invited to attend the Siemens STEM Institute in Washington D.C. this summer along with fifty teachers from across the United States.

Traverse City Area Public Schools salutes the accomplishments of all area educators who were recently honored as a 2010 Outstanding Educator of the Year. Four Traverse City Area Public Schools’ employees were among the honorees to receive this prestigious award. These educators will be honored at the annual awards ceremony held on Wednesday, June 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. at the Dennos Museum, Milliken Auditorium, on the Northwestern Michigan College campus, 1701 East Front Street.

On Wednesday, May 26th, students from Traverse City West Senior High School Freshman Academy will participate in mock job interviews. Students have been role playing, planning answers to probable questions, as well as working on a professional resume that they will bring to their mock interview. Twenty members of the professional community have volunteered their time to interview each student for fifteen minutes on a one-on-one basis. Students are expected to dress professionally for their interview and will be graded by the interviewers on the following aspects of the interviews:
