Central Grade School and Westwoods Elementary School will extend their early childhood programs to include Young Fives for the 2010-2011 school year. The Young Fives program is a half day / every day program for kindergarten age children with late birthdates (May 1-Nov 30). The Young Fives program uses the Creative Curriculum and is intended to focus on the social /emotional and academic readiness skills that will prepare a child for a regular year of kindergarten the following year.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is proud to announce Traverse City West Senior High School’s Chorale has been selected as a semi-finalist in the spring 2010 competition of The American Prize in the Choral Performance category. The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit, national competitions unique in scope and structure, providing cash awards, professional adjudication and regional, national and international recognition. Each year, The American Prize rewards the best recorded performances of music by individuals and ensembles in the United States at the professional, community/amateur, college/university, church, and school levels.

On Saturday, May 29th, Interlochen Community School will hold a school Rummage Sale. Families and community members are invited to take part in this event. Vendors interested in selling their items may rent a booth for $10.00. Each booth is a 10’ X 10’ space. Items may also be donated to Interlochen Community School at the school Main Office. The sale will be from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. outside of the Interlochen Community School, 3113 M-137, Interlochen.

On Wednesday, April 28th, the Willow Hill Elementary School Preschool class will take part in a Trike-a-Thon to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital from 8:45 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Preschoolers will receive pledges based on the number of laps they complete on their tricycles.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) is pleased to announce that Sandy Low, TCAPS’ Finance Manager has been awarded the Chief Financial Officer certification from the Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO). The MSBO award recognizes members who have met requirements for certification under the MSBO Voluntary Certification Program. This award reflects a high degree of academic and professional preparation established by the MSBO Board of Directors through their Professional Development Committee.

On Wednesday, April 28th, preschool students from Westwoods Elementary School will have the opportunity to watch their principal, Sander Scott learn how to shear an alpaca. TCAPS employee Kathy Easter will bring three of her alpaca’s to Westwoods Elementary School to demonstrate the shearing process. Preschool students have been studying animals and will further their learning by observing the shearing process and discuss alpaca fiber (similar to wool) and its many uses. The event will take place at 10:15 a.m. on the Westwoods Elementary School playground, 1500 Fisher Road.

In honor of Earth Day, students at Eastern Elementary School spent last week on projects designed to clean up and beautify their school and community. In addition to the school-wide clean up projects, fifth grade students also collected and carried all of their personal trash to the garbage disposal bin and then reflected on ways each student could reduce the amount of waste they created each day.

On Friday, May 21st, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Eastern Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will host a Family Friday event to recognize the outstanding service of retiring staff members. Principal Sue Zell, and teachers Jane Boerema and Nancy Denison, will retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school year. Eastern Elementary School families and community members are invited to this celebration of the outstanding service and many contributions given to the students and school by the retirees. The event will include craft activities, desserts, and refreshments and will take place in the Eastern Elementary School gymnasium, 1600 Eastern Avenue.

Central Grade School 5th grade teacher, Jaye Lynn Trapp, has been recognized as the 2010 Outstanding American History Teacher in the Grand Traverse Area by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for her outstanding work in bringing American History to life in the studies, lives, and minds of her students.

On Monday, April 26th, Traverse City Area Public Schools will convene its next exploration meeting to discuss the potential of a school and community garden located at Traverse Heights Elementary School. Community members are invited to join the meeting discussion and share thoughts and ideas. This meeting will take place at 9:00 a.m. in Room 137 at Traverse Heights Elementary School, 933 Rose Street.

Traverse City Central High School tenth grade student, Tristan Worthington and ninth grade student, Christina Karakos have been recognized as winners in the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Since 1996, the DAR has joined with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor an annual national essay contest on Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to student in grades 9 through 12.

On Saturday, April 24th, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Traverse City Area Public Schools’ Way to Grow program will take part in the 16th Annual Celebration for Young Children event. TCAPS’ Way to Grow booth will offer hands-on activities for children during the event and will be located in the City Opera House, 106 East Front Street.
